Anthony Friedkin ist ein international anerkannter Fotograf. Seine Bilder sind Teil der permanenten Sammlung des J. Paul Getty Museums, des New Yorker Museum of Modern Art, des Los Angeles County Museums of Art und des San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Seine Arbeiten wurden auch in Japan und Russland ausgestellt und unter anderem in den Zeitschriften Rolling Stone, Zoom, Time und Newsweek veröffentlicht. Er ist Träger zahlreicher Preise und Auszeichnungen, darunter das National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship und das Eastman Kodak Company Special Endorsement. Friedkin stammt aus Los Angeles, Kalifornien, und hat intensiv in West- und Osteuropa, Japan, Mexiko und New York City gearbeitet.
– Über seine Arbeit
Friedkin benutzt seine Kamera für persönliche Entdeckungen. Seine Schwarz-Weiss-Fotografien im Grossformat erkunden die unzähligen Mysterien der Zeit. Er entwickelt seine unverwechselbaren Ausstellungsprints in seiner Dunkelkammer selbst. Über seine Arbeit sagt er: „Ich glaube an aussergewöhnliche Fotografien, die einen in ihren Bann ziehen und sich nicht leicht definieren lassen – so können Wahrnehmung und die vielen versteckten Ebenen der Realität gefeiert werden.“
Seine gesamten Serien sind: The Gay Essay, in San Francisco und Los Angeles, 1969 und 1970 entstanden; The Beverly Hill Essay, 1975 aufgenommen; The The Hollywood Series, welche 1978 von einer speziellen Kommission eingeweiht wurde und bis zum heutigen Tag besteht; und The Ocean-Surfing Essay, welche Friedkins intime, intensive Beziehung mit dem Meer beschreibt. Eine historische Serie von Photographien in New York City Brothels beinhaltet Studien über Prostituierte in ihrem Arbeitsfeld. Eine spezielle Serie von Photographien über kalifornische Gefängnisse und ihre Insassen beinhalten ausdrucksstarke Portraits von inhaftierten Jugendlichen. Für die meiste Zeit seines Lebens photographierte Friedkin in Los Angeles und erschuf so eine einmalige Zustammenstellung von Bildern, in welcher seine Liebe für die facettenreiche Stadt zum Ausdruck kommt.Von den Arbeiten von Atget, Kertesz, and Josef Koudelka inspiriert, bewegt sich Friedkin gekonnt zwischen ungleichen Welten – von den surrealistischen Sets Hollywoods bis zu den Küsten des stürmischen Pazifiks.
Über die Jahre hatte Friedkin unzählige Ausstellungen, wie zum Beispiel im High Museum of Art, Atlanta, im Laguna Art Museum, CA, im Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles, im San Francisco Museum of Art, San Francisco, oder im Museum Folkwang, Essen. Förderbeiträge erhielt er vom National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship und dem Eastman Kodak Company–Special Endorsement. Seine Arbeiten befinden sich unter anderem in Sammlungen wie dem J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, dem Museum of Modern Art, New York, dem Museum of photographic Arts, San Diego oder der The George Eastman Collection, Rhode Island.
Die Werkgruppe Le Mer stellt, neben The Beverly Hills Essay, the Gay Essay, the Hollywood Essay sowie New York Bordelle, seine bedeutendste Arbeit dar.
