Nick Knight ist einer der weltweit einflussreichsten und visionärsten
Photographen. Er thematisiert in seinen Arbeiten viele kontroverse
Themen, wie z. B. Rassismus, Behinderungen, Altersdiskriminierung,
Fettleibigkeit. So fordert er auch kontinuierlich das gängige
Schönheitsideal heraus.
1958 in London geboren, studierte Knight
Photographie am Bournemouth & Poole College of Art and Design. Er
schloss sein Studium mit Auszeichnung ab. Im Jahr 1985 erschien sein
erstes Buch "Skinheads". Dieses gewann den Designer and Art Directors
Award für das beste Buchcover. Im November des Jahres 1993 schrieb
Knight Modegeschichte, als er bei einem Shooting mit Linda Evangelista
einen Ringblitz einsetzte. Das Post-Grunge Cover der britischen Vogue
war ein Meilenstein. Seitdem zierten seine Arbeiten nicht weniger als 36
Cover. Er hat Werbekampagnen für Jil Sander, Louis Vuitton, Calvin
Klein, Yves Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen und
Christian Dior, um nur einige zu nennen, aufgenommen. Er photographierte
Plattencover für David Bowie, Paul Weller, George Michael und Massive
Attack.
Seine Arbeiten wurden in namhaften Institutionen wie dem Victoria & Albert Museum, dem Somerset House, der Saatchi Gallery, der Photographers' Gallery, der Hayward Gallery und dem Tate Modern ausgestellt. Das Natural History Museum in London zeigt eine permanente Installation. 2006 wurde er mit dem renommierten Moët Chandon Fashion Tribute ausgezeichnet. Im selben Jahr erhielt er einen Offiziersorden des Britischen Königreichs als Anerkennung für seine Arbeit. Knight hat begonnen Musikvideos zu drehen, unter den bekanntesten ist sein Erstlingswerk zu "Pagean Poetry" von Björk aus dem Jahr 2001 und "Bound 2" von Kanye West. Im Jahr 2011 produzierte er das Video zu "Born This Way" von Lady Gaga. Song und Video wollen die Solidarität für soziale Minderheiten stärken. Diese Thematik bildet zugleich auch eine der wichtigsten Schwerpunkte in Knights Oeuvre.
