Simen Johan

Simen Johan wurde 1973 in Kirkenes, Norwegen, geboren und wuchs in Südschweden auf. Nach seinem Umzug nach New York im Jahr 1992 studierte Johan zunächst Film an der School of Visual Arts, bevor er zur Fotografie wechselte. Frühe Inspiration fand er in den Werken von Regisseuren wie Stanley Kubrick, David Cronenberg und David Lynch, deren Filme "ihn an spannungsgeladene, seltsame und psychologisch aufgeladene Orte transportierten, die nicht nur unterhalten, sondern auch komplexe Wahrheiten über das Leben, die Menschen und die Welt enthüllen". Eine filmische Sensibilität bleibt in Johans Standbildern spürbar, in denen dramatische Spannung, Atmosphäre und Symbolik Bedeutung vermitteln. Johan reist nah und fern, um sein Ausgangsmaterial zu fotografieren, und kann überall Inspiration finden, vom örtlichen Zoo bis zu den Dschungeln Costa Ricas oder den Lavafeldern Islands. Unzählige Stunden verbringt er dann damit, seine an diesen weit entfernten Orten aufgenommenen Bilder zu einem einheitlichen Ganzen zusammenzufügen. Das Ergebnis ist ein oft beunruhigendes Gefühl der Ortslosigkeit.In seinen Bildern sehen wir Tauben, die wie Motten (oder Engel) dem Licht entgegenströmen; ein Zebra, getarnt durch geografisch inkongruente Palmen; einen ahnungsvollen Höhleneingang (Ungewissheit), der sich in eine helle Öffnung verwandelt (Erleuchtung), wenn das Bild ins Negativ gekehrt wird. Jedes Bild enthüllt poetische und oft unerwartete Beziehungen, die die illusorische und facettenreiche Natur der Existenz ansprechen. Spannungen zwischen dem Offenbarten und dem Verborgenen, dem Verlockenden und dem Bedrohlichen, dem Faktischen und dem Fiktiven prägen und verunsichern die Szenen. Diese Verschmelzungen von Gefühlen, Lebewesen und Umgebungen sind lebensgross gedruckt, um das Ausmass des natürlichen Sehens getreuer darzustellen. Derzeit lebt und arbeitet er in New York.
