Bae Bien-U, der sich mit der Fotografie von Baumlandschaften einen Namen gemacht hat, beschäftigt sich seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten mit seinem Hauptthema, den Bäumen - insbesondere den koreanischen Kiefern -, und hat so eine ganz eigene Sprache der fotografischen Landschaft geschaffen. Anstatt der westlichen Methodik der Fotografie zu folgen, die die Natur als passives Objekt betrachtet, das vom Betrachter eingefangen wird, interpretiert Bae die Natur als ein autonomes Wesen. Anstatt angestarrt zu werden, blicken Baes Bäume mit Erhabenheit auf uns zurück. Baes Kiefern werden selten als Ganzes gesehen, sondern eher als Teile der Stämme, was unser begrenztes Leben im Vergleich zur unendlichen Existenz von Zeit und Natur verdeutlicht.
Die Annäherung des Künstlers an das koreanische Land, das durch Kriege, Kolonialisierung und Diktatur viel Leid erlitten hat, hat eindeutig einen nostalgischen, kontemplativen Charakter. Obwohl der Künstler die Kamera als Werkzeug einsetzt, besucht er die Motive eher auf malerische Art und Weise. Seine Fotografie lässt die Philosophie der koreanischen Kalligrafie wieder aufleben: Demut vor der Natur und der Zeit.
Bae, Bien-U ist eine Schlüsselfigur der koreanischen Fotokunst und hat während seiner langjährigen Lehrtätigkeit eine ganze Generation von Fotografen beeinflusst. Er hat in zahlreichen wichtigen Museen ausgestellt, darunter das National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, das Thyssen Museum, Madrid, das Bozar - Center for Fine Arts, Brüssel und das Samsung Museum of Art LEEUM, Seoul. Seine Werke befinden sich auch in den Sammlungen der National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, des National Museum of Modern Art, Tokio, und des Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Texas, um nur einige zu nennen.
