Die Künstlerin wurde 1972 in Shiga, Japan, geboren. Sie lebt und arbeitet zurzeit in Tokio.
2001 wurde Kawauchi praktisch über Nacht berühmt, als sie den Kimura-Ihei-Preis, den wichtigsten Nachwuchs-Fotopreis Japans gewann. Kurz daraufhin veröffentlichte sie, als erste japanische Fotografin überhaupt, drei Bücher gleichzeitig: Utatane (Schläfchen), Hanabi (Feuerwerk) und Hanako, eine intime Studie eines gleichnamigen jungen Mädchens. Alle drei fanden unter Kritikern viel Anerkennung, und seit ihrem Dreifach-Debüt hat die Künstlerin weitere elf Bücher veröffentlicht. Zudem erhielt Kawauchi den Annual Infinity Award 2009 vom New Yorker International Center of Photography, in der Kategorie Kunst, und wurde 2102 für den Deutsche Börse Photography Prize nominiert. Die Künstlerin hatte schon zahlreiche wichtige Einzelausstellungen, u.a. in der Fondation Cartier pour l’art Contemporain in Paris, im California Museum of Photography in Riverside, Hasselblad Centre in Göteborg, Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, Metropolitan Museum of Photography in Tokio, ARGOS Centrum voor Kunst en Media in Brüssel, in der Londoner Photographers’ Gallery, oder dem Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum in Shizuoka. Zudem zeigte Sie ihre Werke im Huis Marseille in Amsterdam, im Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal, an der Brighton Photo Biennial 2010, im Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in Aichi oder im Art Museum NO-MA in Shiga. Kawauchi besitzt eine einzigartige Bildsprache, eine Art „Zeichnung der Sinne“. Sie beschäftigt sich mit Motiven des Alltäglichen, dem Kreislauf des Lebens, und dessen Vergänglichkeit. Für ihr unverkennbares Auge für Details wird sie von Kunstliebhabern weltweit geschätzt und bewundert.
