Galleri Format in Malmö presents Words Unspoken Reveal Undisclosed Truths, an exhibition dedicated to the experimental aspects of British photographer Stephen Gill’s (*1971, Bristol) artistic practice. For more than three decades, Gill has explored the material and conceptual possibilities of photography, continuously questioning its traditional documentary function. The exhibition is presented in parallel with Truths Undisclosed Reveal Unspoken Words at Landskrona Foto. Together, the two presentations offer a comprehensive exploration of Gill’s photographic practice spanning more than thirty years, tracing the evolution of his artistic approach from documentary observation towards increasingly experimental methods.

At the heart of Gill’s photographic practice lies his close relationship with the places and environments he explores. During his many years working in East London, he developed a particular sensitivity to the overlooked details of everyday life and the often hidden qualities that define the character of a place. Over time, however, he increasingly began to question the possibilities of conventional documentary photography. The purely descriptive representation of reality seemed insufficient to convey the complex impressions, emotions and experiences associated with a particular place.

This questioning led Gill to fundamentally expand his photographic methods. Rather than relying exclusively on the medium’s descriptive qualities, he began consciously incorporating its perceived weaknesses into the image-making process. Blurring, layering, obscuring and deliberately withholding visual information opened up new possibilities for moving beyond visible reality. Chance, materiality and his immediate surroundings increasingly became essential elements of his photographic language.

The exhibition at Galleri Format focuses particularly on this experimental and material dimension of his work. Gill explores how photography can be used not only to depict a place but also to express its atmosphere and more elusive qualities. Elements of his surroundings become part of the photographic process itself, increasingly dissolving the boundaries between subject, material and image-making. Photography thus becomes an open-ended process in which the unexpected is as significant as deliberate artistic intervention.

While the parallel exhibition at Landskrona Foto highlights the development of Gill’s relationship with his immediate surroundings through series created in East London and Skåne, Galleri Format focuses on the experimental methods that have shaped his photographic practice over the years. Together, the two exhibitions offer complementary perspectives on his artistic development, illustrating how his approach has continuously evolved and expanded over more than three decades.

Throughout these different approaches, Gill’s work remains driven by an enduring curiosity about the world around him. His photographs challenge the boundaries between observation and interpretation, reality and imagination, opening up new perspectives on the relationship between photography, material and place.
